The Power of Baby Signing: Enhancing Communication and Self-Esteem

Are you searching for a way to enhance communication with your little one?

Look no further than the incredible world of baby signing!

Baby signing is so much more than you can possibly imagine at first glance.

One of the key pain points that baby signing addresses, over and over again, is the frustration that we so often experience when we can’t decipher what our babies actually want.

It empowers babies and toddlers to have a say in what they want or need, boosting their self-esteem as they grow up and giving them the confidence to communicate even more.

Let us introduce you to our adorable baby signing stars, who will show you the magic of baby signing in action.

Baby Signing More – Orion shows us how (British Sign Language)

In this little clip you’ll see gorgeous Orion signing MORE to his mummy.

Orion’s mummy has already noticed that he signs for more by banging on his high chair tray. She lovingly repeats the word to make sure she understood him correctly.

Orion lets his mummy know that she got it right with a little smile.

If this was not correct, you’d have seen Orion turning his face away and possibly becoming upset.

The ‘more’ sign is hugely popular with small folk everywhere!

Be prepared for your baby to possibly pat their tummy, as, when you are standing and they are sitting, this is what it looks like you are doing at their eye level.

Babies may also clap hands or bang on the table, just like Orion does!

Helping little ones to have a say in what they want or need has a wonderful effect on their self esteem as they grow up, which in turn gives babies and toddlers the confidence to communicate – even more.

Getting started with baby signing; Tips and Techniques for success

Getting started with baby signing is, fortunately, way easier than you might think.

1. Begin by familiarising yourself with a few basic signs relevant to your baby’s everyday needs and routines – things like eat, milk, drink, cuddle, sleep and nappy change.  You’ll find some of these very first signs for babies and toddlers further down on the blog.

2. Online resources and video tutorials, like the one featuring our adorable baby signing star, Orion, can guide you in learning these signs.

3. Start by introducing one sign at a time, consistently using it in context when interacting with your baby. Repetition and consistency are key to helping your baby grasp the meaning of the sign.

It’s important to note that your baby may initially have their own interpretation of a sign, just like Orions’s banging gesture for “MORE.”

Don’t worry!

This is a normal part of the learning process.

Encourage your baby’s attempts and continue modeling the correct sign. Over time, you’ll witness your baby’s progress and their growing confidence in using the correct sign.
